COSTUME DUCA DI NOTTINGHAM (»ROBERTO DEVEREUX« - GAETANO DONIZETTI)

COSTUME DUCA DI NOTTINGHAM (»ROBERTO DEVEREUX« - GAETANO DONIZETTI) - Costume Treasures of the Vienna State Opera

Director: Silviu Purcarete
Costume Designer: Helmut Stürmer
Premiere: December 7, 2000
Size: 52/54*
The theater and film director Silviu Purcarete and his set and costume designer Helmut Stürmer had the action take place in a kind of Mediterranean theater museum, in which the actors slowly come to life. The costumes are historical, but in this theater-within-a-theater play they should also be understood as valuable theater costumes from a rich treasury.
The Duke of Nottingham undergoes a decisive change in this opera: when he learns that his wife is having an affair with his best friend Roberto Devereux, he turns into a merciless avenger who only finds peace when the title hero loses his head. KS Carlos Álvarez, KS Renato Bruson, Yu Chen and Giovanni Meoni have sung this grateful baritone role, rich in flowing melodies. The costume consisting of a hat, a collet (jacket) and breeches was made of silk, linen and cotton. Here, too, the silver color predominates, which is designed to symbolize the rank of the wearer. Since the costume has been processed solidly with silver paint, it has great strength and rigidity. Some material damage is visible.
*As the costume was made to measure for the singer, it may differ from the standard size.
