COSTUME MENS SUPERNUMERARY (»ELEKTRA« - RICHARD STRAUSS)

COSTUME MENS SUPERNUMERARY (»ELEKTRA« - RICHARD STRAUSS) - Costume Treasures of the Vienna State Opera

Director: Uwe Eric Laufenberg
Costume Designer: Marianne Glittenberg
Premiere: March 29, 2015
Size: EU 52*
In 2015, a new production directed by Uwe Eric Laufenberg of Richard Strauss’ »Elektra« was presented at the Vienna State Opera. The director relocated the plot to a coal cellar of a grand manorial house from the turn of the century, and thereby representing the continued laboring and simmering of the hidden feelings and conflicts below the surface that were not dealt with. The suppressive system of Clytemnestra, who with her daughter Elektra tries to push her guilty conscience underground, weighs heavily during the opera. There is only a liberation at the end - and then only for a brief moment before the situation changes again. In the final dance of Elektra, Laufenberg stages as a brightly contrasting festival, supported by many more dancers and extras. Therefore, the costumes in the finale are kept in bright colors, in contrast to the oppressive darkness of the cellar. It is a break-open, a break-out: these are costumes, whose cut is reminiscent of the 1950s, and want to leave the dark history behind them. Costume designer Marianne Glittenberg: »We wanted to expand this final part of the opera, to give the whole thing a superordinate view of the before and after, and I want to show that through the costumes of this dance.« This costume consists of a shirt, tie, jacket, trousers and belt, and is made of cotton. It is in very good condition.
*As the costume was made to measure for the supernumerary, it may differ from the standard size.
