Böttger (Böttiger) Johann Friedrich, Schleiz 4.2.1682-13.3.1719 Dresden, German alchemist, together with the mathematician and physicist Tschirnhaus, who had already conducted ceramic melting experiments, succeeded in producing what came to be known as ‘Böttger’s stoneware’ in 1707. After Tschirnhaus’ death, he succeeded in his attempt to produce porcelain (which was initially yellowish, becoming white only in around 1717); he headed the porcelain manufactory in Meissen.
