Naito Shinjuku, Yotsuya (Yotsuya Naito Shinjuku), from the "Meisho Edo hyakkei" series (Hundred Views of Edo), nishiki-e, signed Hiroshige ga, publisher Uoya Eikichi, dated 1857 (Ansei 4, month 11), censor seal aratame, snake 11; compare sheet and details with acc. no. RES.21.393: a conspicuous feature of the present sheet is the very good visibility of the wood grain not only above in the brown area of the sky, but also as a textural design element of the left flank of the horse. Even if the red tones appear slightly faded, there are similarities with the Boston sheet, including the outline at the lower right margin near the corner, a very small fold above the signature cartouche, and the top of the ridge on the left. Both sheets show a version with a diagonal (rather than vertical) street along the post office; backed, the right margins outside the image area are also backed, minimally stained, tiny smoothed crease to the lower left corner, 36.3 x 24.8 cm, mounted, framed, (CT)
