Angola, Zambia. Wood. 39 cm. Around 1900. These figures are associated with female initiation, the young women's hair shaven on the sides and plated in a helmetlike bun. She then receives her scarification and leaves the family house. These figures were not made for the initiation period but may have a connection to honoring female ancestors for a diviner's tutelary spirits. (VJ)
