19th century. Wood. 117 x 32 cm. A very good example of a warriors shield with circle and hook designs that form a central 'Aso' or dog-dragon face with large eyes and fangs. Headhunting was an important rite of passage for young men and essential to ensure the prosperity of the whole community. Some shields have tufts of hair taken from victims, attached to the shield in rows. (VJ)
