Papuan Gulf. Early 20th century. Wood, pigments. 68 cm. The people of the Papuan Gulf, like the Purari River Delta, used these musical boards during funerals of important men, swinging them on a piece of string until they vibrate. The somber and alluring sound is why they are called imunu viki ('weeping spirits'). (VJ)
