The carpet features a woven reproduction of Simon Grynaeus’ 1532 world map with magnificent border illustrations by Hans Holbein the Younger and Latin texts. Particularly noteworthy are the elaborate borders with scenes depicting cannibals, snakes, demons, etc. The exact provenance of the carpet cannot be determined. As the design suggests, it was probably a commissioned piece and no typical regional designs can be discerned. It was primarily used as a tapestry and is therefore in a good state of preservation.
