Baku, East Caucasus, c. 238 x 129 cm,
East Caucasus, c. 238 x 129 cm, 19th century. Early carpets from the Baku area are extremely rare. When oil was found on the Absheron peninsula as early as 1900, the local population quickly abandoned the laborious knotting of carpets. Old Baku rugs with their unmistakable delicate blue and yellow tones often exude a special magic. In contrast to their almost ethereal colours, their ornamentation is characterised by archaic austerity and precision. With original edges, in good condition. (VP)
