(Berlin 1800–1861 Hamburg)
A View of Vienna from the Belvedere Garden, oil on canvas, 48 x 113 cm, framed
Provenance:
Sotheby’s London, 12 June 1974;
Baumkotter Gallery, London;
Private Collection Vienna.
After training as a landscape painter at the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin, Johann Heinrich Hintze embarked on a study trip which would take him to Holstein, the Alps, Austria and Prague, among others. He would subsequently turn many of the sketches and drawings executed during his travels into paintings and watercolours upon his return to Germany. His characteristic brilliant technique and precise interpretation of his subjects gained him the attention of King Friedrich Wilhelm III, who hired the artist to accompany him on his travels. Although most of Hintze’s work focuses on depictions of the city of Berlin, he also executed numerous paintings of Salzburg, Prague and Vienna. Hintze is regarded, along with Eduard Gaertner, Johann Erdmann Hummel and Carl Hasenpflug, as one of the best landscape and architecture painters of his time.
