A Rare Fortepiano, - Furniture; Works of Art; Glas and Porcelain

produced by FERDINAND HOFMANN, ‘Clavier Instrumentenmacher’ in Vienna, c. 1790, bouncing tongue action, 5 1/4 octaves, cherry and pinewood frame on conical square-cut legs, long stringing, ivory keyboard, c. 87 x 214 x 100 cm, heavy signs of age and use, not in working order, in need of restoration. FERDINAND HOFMANN (1756-1829) was born in Vienna in the same year as W. A. MOZART. At the age of 28, he founded a piano manufactory that was capable of producing one instrument per week with 8 craftsmen. F. HOFMANN manufactured pianos for almost 40 years and was highly respected in his guild, receiving the title of a K & K Court Purveyor in 1812. He died in 1829 at the age of 73.

An identical model is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Metropolitan Museum New York, Accession Number: 1984.34
