Gmunden c. 1800, wood carved in the round, polychrome painted, figure size c. 14 cm, including further crib figures by other artists: Magus with feather crown, cow and two deacons with candlesticks, age-related damage, (MC)

Johann Georg Schwanthaler (1740 - 1810 Gmunden), began his training as a sculptor with his father Franz Mathias Schwanthaler, then with his grandfather Johann Franz and especially with his uncle Johann Peter the Elder Schwanthaler in the Ried workshop. Subsequently he worked as a journeyman with the Wels sculptor Ignaz Mähl.
Nativity scenes and works of small religious art objects were his main creative field.
His works include reliefs, (Schlierbach and Kremsmünster monasteries, treasury of the Holy Chapel at Altötting) and church cribs in Altmünster and Kematen an der Krems.
