VIVIENNE WESTWOOD, born in Swire in Tintwistle, Derbyshire, in 1941. As a 16-year-old she already demonstrated an unusual taste in clothes that did not follow the latest fashion trend. In 1966, she began designing her own fashion items for her shop, which she made herself. In 1981, she and Malcolm McLaren presented their collection, called "Pirates," on the catwalk for the first time. In 1983, she made the acquaintance of Carlo D’Amario, who promoted both her as a fashion designer and her company. Without him, she would not have achieved the prominence she enjoys in the fashion industry today. She subsequently left England and moved to Italy, beginning a collaboration with fashion designer Giorgio Armani. In 1989, she was appointed professor of fashion at the Vienna University of Applied Arts (Hochschule für angewandte Kunst). She made the acquaintance of the much younger Andreas Kronthaler, whom she married in 1992. Westwood also received the international recognition she longed for as a fashion designer. She received major international prizes, awards and honours, including the “Order of the British Empire” in 1992. In 1992, she accepted a teaching position as professor of fashion at the Art College (Hochschule für Künste) in Berlin. In 1997, she was awarded a prize for outstanding export achievements. In 1998, her first fragrance line was launched. Her collection enjoyed international success, especially in Japan. She received further awards and decorations in 2004, 2006 and 2015.
