Lot No. 76

School of Amsterdam, 17th Century

School of Amsterdam, 17th Century - Old Master Paintings

Portrait of a gentleman holding a glass of wine,
oil on panel, 66 x 52 cm, framed

Provenance:
Private collection, South Germany

The present panel is an unusual and highly characterful portrayal of a probable member of the Amsterdam Wine Merchants Guild, founded in 1624. Painted by an accomplished Amsterdam hand, likely at some point in the 1620s, it may be compared with the 1627 portrait of Marten Rey by Nicolaes Eliasz. Pickenoy, conserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (see fig. 1).

Fred Meijer notes the atypical nature of the ruff worn by the gentleman, which is open at the collar. Another founder of the Winemakers Guild, Dirck van Dans, was also portrayed by Pickenoy in 1626, illustrated in the archives of the RKD (no. 260653).
