The Visitation,
mixed media, detached fresco, transferred to canvas, 201 x 212, unframed
Provenance:
Private collection, Vienna;
where acquired by the present owner
We are grateful to Simone Facchinetti for suggesting the attribution of the present painting. He dates the present work to circa 1520–1535.
The scene is framed on both sides by architectural elements, which may indicate that the composition is substantially intact. The Visitation is placed in a hilly landscape with a castle on top of a hill in the background. The artist enriched the composition with details, such as the vegetation in the background and the architecture on the right, together with genre elements, such as the young women on the left, one of whom is holding chickens.
