Marco Liberi

Marco Liberi - Old Master Paintings II

(Venice, active in the second half of the 17th century)
An Allegory of Temperance,
oil on canvas, 99.5 x 84.1 cm, framed

We are grateful to Fabrizio Magani for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.

The present painting depicts an allegory of temperance, one of the four Cardinal Virtues. Temperance, the capability of moderation, is represented as a woman, mixing hot and cold water by pouring it from a vase into a basin. The female figure is accompanied by two putti, who carry two of her attributes: the water-filled vase and reins.

Marco Liberi began his artistic education under the guidance of his father, Pietro Liberi (1614–1687), in whose workshop he trained. Influenced by his father, Marco created religious and mythological subjects with billowing draperies, strong facial expressions, elegant gestures and luscious forms. Furthermore, the lingering impression made by the work of Paolo Veronese are also evident in Marco’s lighting and brushwork.
