Miquel Barceló * - Contemporary Art I

(born in Felantix, Mallorca in 1957)
Nuage sur la Mer (Cloud above the Sea), 2002, on the reverse titled, signed, dated Barceló IX. 02 NUAGE SUR LA MER,
oil on canvas, 73.5 x 92 cm, framed

Provenance:
Galerie Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich (gallery label)
Paris, Tajan, 17 May 2006, lot 300
European Private Collection

With his application of paint, Miquel Barceló takes up elements of Art Informel and Tachism in his work and develops them into his own style. Nevertheless, his work is still strongly captured by Realism. The artworks of Barceló are evidence of a unique interaction with materials and forms, in technique and artistic subject as well as a fascinating play with light and colour. The works are dominated by archaic subjects – of the elapse of time. Miquel Barceló conceives his painting and sculpture as a constantly changing system, as an open cosmos between life and death.
Nuage sur la Mer seems like a classical seascape which fascinates due to the application of paint and the exact reproduction of different shades of blue. This work by Miquel Barceló is a seascape as it is a weather picture. Nature is registered without forcefully dominating the foreground. It’s a calm sea on a sunny day which lets you sit back and take a moment to relax and think of holiday.
