Kum Kapu silk, - Oriental Carpets, Textiles and Tapestries

West Anatolia (Turkey), c. 168 x 128 cm, about 1920, fine silk carpets, often brocaded with metal threads, were manufactured in small workshops located in the eponymous Armenian district (Kumkapı) of Istanbul, the best-known weavers were Zareh Penyamin and Toussounian; the present prayer rug most likely comes from the Zareh master workshop, it is preserved in excellent condition and features the aforementioned embedded metal threads, both ends and side edges are complete and original.
