France, c. 305 x 254 cm, about 1700, the “Allegory of vanity” was an important subject in visual arts from the Middle Ages to the Baroque period; in the present piece a noble lady in a magnificent park landscape looks at herself in the mirror while servants wash her feet; the tapestry is very finely woven from silk and wool, the figures and architecture with fountain and temple are depicted in a very realistic fashion, surrounded by a magnificent border decorated with fruit and bouquets of flowers, very good colour condition and extraordinary state of preservation, no visible damaged areas, wholly complete and original, secured with a large burlap strip.
