A very fine Nwantanay mask, Bobo Bwa wood, Burkina Fasso.
207 cm high. These large wooden plank masks are carved to represent various animal spirits that inhabit the natural world. These spirits, though largely invisible, are associated with water and flight. They can take physical forms as insects, moths or butterflies or as large waterfowl, like the ibis. Some Bwa describe a mythological encounter in which a flying spirit appeared before a human, offering protection and service. (VJ)
