Wood, metal, 79 cm high. Blacksmiths were held in high regard in Africa, and this exceptional fine bellow shows the prestige that came with the transformation of metals. This elegant ironsmith's bellow has two chambers that would have been covered with a loose diaphragm of skin. These were pushed up and down to pump air into the charcoal, through clay tubes, to achieve high temperatures. (VJ)
