An important and rare Yamate Mimika shield West Papua.
Wood, pigments. 172 cm high. Linked to the word for war shield 'James', these stylized figures refer to recent ancestors, often warriors and were used during the remembrance rites , also aligned with initiation of the new members. The first seen were described as ceremonial tablets, but very few of these have been seen. (VJ)
