Iran, c. 190 x 150 cm, 19th century. An important tribal carpet of the Khamseh Confederacy in wonderful state of preservation. Its design, with a floral central medallion on an ivory field and sweeping light blue arabesques in the corners, closely follows Kirman models in composition and style. According to the latest findings, such excellent specimens were created under workshop conditions as a commissioned work for the tribal khans. A similar item is mentioned in James Opie, ‘Tribal Rugs of Southern Persia’. (VP)
