Lot No. 201

Hokusai (1760-1849)

Hokusai (1760-1849) - Asian Art

Nidanme (Act II) from the series: "Kanadehon Chushingura" (The Treasury of Loyal Retainers), publisher Kinsuke Tsuruya (Sokakudo), unsigned, dated 1806. The series was originally published in 1806. Honzo is depicted cutting the branch of a pine tree. Lord Wakasanosuke watches him from the porch. The lovers Rikiya and Konami are visible inside the house. In contrast to the "Hokusai Prints Catalogue Raisonne", Gordon Friese, to whom we owe this expert opinion, assumes the existence of at least 6 states of the print, rather than just 5. Some of the sheets that the aformentioned catalogue attributes to the third state actually differ from each other. In the first and second states, the rear mountain has a white cap. This is also the case with the Portland Museum sheet (no. 32,381), the third state, but not on the Harvard sheet (VAM, Harvard no. 1933. 4.2727). In the latter, the mountain is coloured through, just like the Minneapolis sheet representing the fourth state. This is also the case with the present sheet. Gordon Friese regards it as a print from the original woodblocks. It matches the Harvard sheet (without publisher’s seal, mountain coloured through, with clouds). Thus, it is a later print, executed after the original publisher sold the woodblocks. These were used by another printer for further prints. This probably happened during Hokusai’s lifetime. The colours of the present sheet are still good. The sheet is heavily rubbed in the upper part of the cartouche. Full margin on the left, slightly trimmed on the right, the red longitudinal clouds are also a slightly rubbed, some staining, mounted on paper, 25.3 x 37.3 cm, (CT)
