Ernst Graner - Master Drawings, Prints before 1900, Watercolours, Miniatures

(Werdau, Saxony 1865–1943 Vienna) Old Albrechtsplatz (today Albertinaplatz) in Vienna with Philipphof and Mozart monument, titled and dated “Albrechtsplatz in Vienna, Philipphof mit Mozartmonument, 7. Novber 1899” on the reverse, signed E. Graner, watercolor on cardboard, 38 x 31,5 cm, framed, without glass, browned, (BH)

Philipphof was built according to plans of Karl König for the banker Philipp Zierer. The courtyard which was detached on all sides was architecturally one of the most valuable apartment buildings in Vienna. On March 12, 1945 the Philipphof was hit by bombs and destroyed. The Mozart monument was also created by Karl König and Viktor Tilgner and was unveiled in 1896. The bombing of 1945 also damaged the monument, which after restoration was erected in its present location in the Burggarten in 1953.
