Marcello Venusti - Old Master Paintings II

(Mazzo di Valtellina, Sondrio circa 1510–1579 Rome)
The Deposition,
oil on canvas, 101 x 76.5 cm, framed

We are grateful to Francesca Parrilla for suggesting the attribution of the present painting.

The present painting relates to a drawing conserved in the Albertina, Vienna , which has been previously tentatively attributed to Sebastiano del Piombo. Changes in the composition can be seen in the figure of Christ, that of Joseph of Arimathea, as well as in the arrangement of the cross.

This work also relates to a lost painting by Sebastiano del Piombo recorded in a print when the work was in the Orléans collection (see J. Couché-Fontenay, Galerie du Palais royal gravée d’aprés les tableaux des différentes écoles qui la composent, Paris 1786).

In general, the figure types of these works are based on compositions by Michelangelo, including the drawing of a torso (Florence, Casa Buonarroti, inv. no. 69F), as well as Michelangelo’s Pietà Bandini (Museo del Duomo, Florence).
