The Castello Estense and the Panfilio Canal, Ferrara,
oil on canvas, 73.3 x 94.2 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection
We are grateful to Dario Succi for suggesting the attribution of the present painting on the basis of a photograph.
The present painting of the Castello Estense in Ferrara is a work by Giuseppe Coen. The historian Abram Pesaro observed in his Memorie storiche della Comunità Israelitica ferrarese (1880) that: ‘verso il 1840 ebbe incarico di ritrarre la facciata della cattedrale e due differenti punti del Castello di questa città e ne trasse argomento per tre importanti vedute’ [‘around 1840, he [Coen] was charged with the task of representing the façade of the cathedral and two differing perspectives of the castle in this city, and these supplied the subjects for three important views’].
Giuseppe Coen was born in Treviso but was active for most of his career in Ferrara. He was among the illustrators of Antonio Frizzi’s Album Estense, which was published by Abram Servadio in 1850. A lithograph from this series of the Castello Estense, seen from a similar viewpoint, is conserved in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1982, U.635)
