King Stephen attracted numerous Germans to his country, which he subsequently Christianised. In 1001, he had himself crowned with a royal crown (‘Stephen’s crown’) sent to him by the Pope. He is credited with establishing a regulated administration based on the Frankish model and founded the Archbishopric of Esztergom. He was canonised in 1087. The anniversary refers to the foundation of Hungary in the year 896.
