Leo Putz

Leo Putz - Modern Art

(Meran 1869–1940)
“Stehender Akt”, signed, dated Leo Putz 06, oil on canvas, 117 x 88.5 cm, backed with fabric in two areas on the reverse, framed

Illustrated and registered:
Helmut Putz, Leo Putz 1869–1940, catalogue raisonné, vol. II, 1994, p. 645, no. 327

Provenance:
Private Collection, Salzburg

At some point in the summer of 1906, perhaps in the "Silbermann Garden" in the Munich district of Steinhausen, Leo Putz completed this large-format painting of a nude in a garden. It is quite possible that he is depicting Frieda Blell, his model, muse and soon-to-be wife. Her face is turned to the side, the sunlight filtered through the foliage of the trees sweeps enticingly over her naked body, sculpting her profile. This painting encapsulates the components of Leo Putz’s success, then and now: the painterly processing of light absorbed in colour, detachment from the line in favour of a loose, pleasurable juxtaposition of coloured surfaces that – at a distance – melt into a lively, vibrating depiction of the body.
