Wotruba journeyed to Rotterdam in March for the opening of the aforementioned travelling exhibition, which at that time had been taken over by the Boymans van Beuningen Museum. Wotruba commented: “It is probably the most beautiful of this exhibition series [...] As a result of the exhibition, I have been commissioned by the city of R. to erect a stone sculpture in a place of my choosing.” In the same month, the artist is commissioned by the music publisher B. Schott’s Söhne, Mainz, to create a sculpture dedicated to the memory of Richard Wagner (cat. rais. 302). In 1970 the monument is erected on the banks of the Rhine in Mainz at the level of the Rheingoldhalle. ...
