Emperor Maximilian I
(1459 -1519), portrait, the emperor in profile with sceptre and crown, inscribed: "Imperator Ceasar Maximilianus pius felix", oil on panel, crown and sceptre, cover and inscription in relief, 86 x 66 cm, framed, second half of the 19th century, (Lu)
The present very good portrait was long considered a 16th-century work and was also displayed as such, among others, in the exhibition of the Tyrolean Provincial Museum Ferdinandeum, “Das Bildnis Kaiser Maximilian I. auf Münzen und Medaillien” (cat. no. 89). The portrait goes back to a relief portrait of the emperor from around 1515 from the chapel of Hasegg Castle in Hall, which was transferred to the Castle in Merano in 1886.
