Max Röder

Max Röder - 19th Century Paintings and Watercolours

(Munich 1866-1947 Rome)
A Park Landscape with Nymphaeum, Rome, signed, dated MAX ROEDER ROMA (18)92, oil on canvas, 173 x 230 cm, framed, (MHH)

Provenance:
Private Collection, Bonn;
Art trade, Bonn.

Two letters from the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome and from the Accademia di San Luca are enclosed.

From 1888 onwards, Max Roeder lived in Rome, where he taught as a professor at the Accademia di San Luca. The present picture was created as a free composition probably under the impression of landscape paintings of Hadrian's Villa or of baroque villas in the Campagna. Max Röder was one of the last so called “Deutschrömer” painters. Under the influence of Arnold Böcklin, he imbued his large-format paintings with a romantic and symbolist mood. He is considered an outstanding representative of a classical, colouristic and impressionistic landscape painting. His collectors included King Victor Emmanuel III.
