A Pair of Wine Coolers of the Knights of Malta, - Silver

silver, of round form, foot area with raised busts and steles on punched ground, two sculptural boys’ heads as handles, silver inserts with two circular handles, engraved alliance coat of arms of the Grand Master Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, height 22 cm, dia 22 cm, weight 6085 g, master’s mark “BR/UN”, assayer’s puncture (‘Tremolierstich’), Maltese hallmark, c. 1750 (?), (Lu)

A pair of very rare, heavy, magnificent wine coolers of the Knights of Malta. The alliance coat of arms refers to the Grand Master of the Order of Knights of Malta Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, who was in charge from 1722 to 1736. Since the master Pierre Brun can only be documented in Malta in around 1750, the engraved coat of arms must have been applied at a later date. A certificate with material analysis by DI Dr. Robert Linke regarding the age of the present item is enclosed.
