South India, c. 149 x 111 cm, 18th century. A fine Mughal silk carpet with partial wool pile in the central field. Carpets such as the present one were manufactured in small numbers at the Turko-Mongolian imperial court of the Indo-Islamic Mughal Empire (1526-1858). The Great Mughals originated from the Timurid dynasty of Central Asia. With numerous damaged areas, missing parts and old repairs, slightly trimmed in length, mounted on a frame. (VP)
