A Very Fine Baule Blolo Bian Figure, likely by the 'Master of the Double Eyelids'

A Very Fine Baule Blolo Bian Figure, likely by the 'Master of the Double Eyelids' - Tribal Art

Ivory Coast, wood, restored surface, early collection label, 43 cm high. This is male figure with hands on belly, transverse beard, crested coiffure and features that link it to the 'Master of the double eyelids', also known as the 'Maitre de Verite'. The figures of this famous carver are easily recognizable by the flared earlobe, the double detailed eyelids, a sensual protruding mouth, a solemn expression, the distinguishable nostrils and detailed toenails. Up to now, only a few male figures, mostly seated, are known but further research will certainly broaden the corpus.

Provenance:
Meulendijk Collection, Rotterdam. Meulendijk started collecting ethnographic objects in the interbellum. His collection is known from: "Afrikaanse Sculpturen. Uit de collectie van C. P. Meulendijk." Museum voor Land en Volkenkunde, Rotterdam 1967/68.
