Ivory Coast, wood, 119 cm high. These large standing sculptures for the Poro societies were kept in the sacred forest and used in the rites for admission. Named 'poro pia nong', or 'mother of the Poro child', these statues are a symbol of the Poro leadership, indicating the authority of its elders. The morphology of these statues, with references both to male and female characteristics;
a swollen, pregnant belly and an elongated phallic beak represent the dual forces of the male and female components, symbolizing the need for both to ensure the continuity of the whole community. The Hornbill is believed to be associated with intellectual power, stressing the knowledge the elders hope to transfer to the young initiates.
