![Idiok Ekpo Mask - Tribal Art Idiok Ekpo Mask - Tribal Art](/fileadmin/lot-images/39T221013/normal/idiok-ekpo-mask-8244429.jpg)
Ibibio, Nigeria, late 19th-early 20th c., wood, vegetal fibres, rattan, 31 cm high. The Ekpo society has two types of masks, one is in bright colours, showing delicate features, called Mfon. The other type (Idiok) has surreal, scary features, and is mostly painted black, red and brown, representing a person whose bad deeds have caused him to become a ghost. The "good" Mfon Ekpo masks appear during the day, and the "evil" Idiok Ekpo masks appear during the night. These masks were often called 'disease' masks but they are more 'moral' masks, explaining which path will lead to the light. It is in the strength and expressiveness of these Idiok masks that we can see the impressive range of the Ekpo society masquerade.
