Mambila 'Tadep' Figure Donga Valley, Sardauna Province

Mambila 'Tadep' Figure Donga Valley, Sardauna Province - Tribal Art

Nigeria/Cameroon, wood, 44 cm high. Little is known about Tadep Mambila figures, which depict humans in a range of abstract forms, as they have been out of use since about the 1970s. The earlier assumption that they were used in ancestor worship has recently been questioned. Instead, they may have been owned by 'Suaga' and were asssociated with illness and healing, placed in shrines outside the village. Previously described as 'Kaka', this figure shares characteristics with these neighbouring 'Enok Ateng' figures.
