A Bwami Society Mask from the Lega People - Tribal Art

RDC, Maniema, 'Lukwakongo', wood, 26 cm high. Representing the ideal Lega man, this mask is the sign of 'Yananio', the last in the Lega's governing Bwami association. Lukwakongo literally means 'death gathers in', a reference to the portrayal and importance of the ancestors. Lukwakongo are not worn on the face but tied to the arm, held in the hands or displayed on a presentation board at the Bwami meetings.

Collected in Bukavu in 1969 by Father Antoine Verwilghen S. J.
