A Three-Part Romanesque Sculptural Group of a Deposition, - Furniture; works of art; glass and porcelain

Italy, Tuscany, first half of the 13th century, Christ is lifted down from the cross by Joseph of Arimathea, on the left stands St. Mary mourning with veiled hands, on the right St. John, carved poplar wood, polychrome painted at a later date, sizes 143-147 cm, (MC)

Jacqueline Liéveaux-Boccador/ Edouard Bresset, Statuaire médiévale de collection, Milan 1972, fig. 282: This Deposition from the Cross comes from a private Milanese collection. It was originally from the area of Lucca (Tuscany, central Italy) and dates from the first half of the 13th century. Technical analysis: A 2019 radiocarbon dating of the wood performed by the Università del Salento dates the wood between 1169 AD and 1296 AD. An examination of the pigment of the paint coating, on the other hand, indicates the mid-20th century.
