Lower Austria, c. 1700, half-length figure, the saint in side view over a baroque cartouche, a hand pointing to his chest, his gaze directed towards the sky, carved lime wood, hollowed out on the back, polychrome painted and gilt, 51 x 56x 25 cm, age-related damage, some small parts missing, others replaced, (MC)
Several features suggest an attribution to Giovanni Giuliani, including the type head, the animated character of the composition with the rotation of the upper part of the body, the masterly carved hand pointing to the chest, and the characteristics of the folds.
Compare:
Luigi A. Ronzoni: Giovanni Giuliani (1664-1744), ed. Johann Kräftner, Lichtenstein Museum Vienna 2005, inter alia fig. side view of the model of St. Paul catalogue no. 34 p. 80, St. Joachim catalogue no. 25, head type St. Peter catalogue no. 6 p. 28f.
