bronze, brown patina, of round form, parcel-gilt, marble base, the body with raised bacchanal, height 35.5 cm, probably manufactured by the company Barbedienne, second half of the 19th century, (Lu)
The “Townley Vase”, which is exhibited in the British Museum today, is a large Roman marble vase dating from the 2nd century. The present pair of vases was probably made by Barbedienne in the second half of the 19th century according to the method for the mechanical reduction of sculptures (“réduction méchanique”) developed by Achille Collas in around 1834.
