Catherine of Alexandria, saint, legendary martyr, her cult goes back to a 6th/7th-century account of her martyrdom. Two motifs in particular, the philosophical argument and the torture wheel with knives, established numerous patronages. Her symbols are a palm, a book, a wheel and a sword. Carlo Dolci, Italian painter, Florence 1616-1686 Baldinucci. His earliest work is a portrait of a young man (Galleria Pitti, Florence), painted when he was only 14 years old, which is also evidence of the artist’s precocious talent. A St. Catherine is mentioned in his oeuvre, perhaps from the monastery of S. Caterina in Florence.
