An Imposing Ornamental Vase “Entry of Charles V into Antwerp” after Hans Makart, Vienna 1878, Signed Franz Dörfl, Vienna 1902–1912, Porcelain, - Furniture; works of art; glass and porcelain

An ornamental vase with all-round colourful depiction, the figure of the young emperor sitting in the centre of the picture on horseback. With his right hand he points to a group of women in which two women, the Klinkosch sisters, are depicted almost naked to the left of the emperor. German actress Charlotte Wolter (1834-1897) is depicted in the lower left corner with a red dress and a standing child. A multitude of figures crowd around Emperor Charles V;
the men are drawn in darker colours. Under the left garland is a man with beard and long hair depicting Albrecht Dürer, who was actually present at the entry of Charles V. In the background of this dense street scene are buildings decorated with garlands, parts of buildings and a few standards decorated with coats of arms. On the left in the background, the silhouette of the city of Antwerp and blue sky. The four cobalt blue sides are decorated with wide and narrow gilt edging, gilt leaf and flower tendrils, acanthus leaves, rosettes, palmettes, rhombs, lattice-work, meanders, garlands of flowers and flower festoons, base on the facing side and reverse with 1 oval medallion each with polychrome painted female figures in springtime landscapes, the cover with gold pine finial, total height 130 cm, cover height 14 cm, neck height 23 cm, baluster height 51 cm, base height 42 cm, foot rim with minor chipping, c. 5 mm, blue mark, FD, WIEN, AUSTRIA, signature on the stone base with a red shawl carried by a boy, the original imposing oil painting, 520–950 cm, is preserved in the Hamburger Kunsthalle (Ru)

Charles V Ghent 24.2.1500-21.9.1558, Spanish King 1516-1556, Roman King 1519-1556, Emperor 1530-1656, marriage to Isabella of Portugal (Lisbon 1503-1539 Toledo) - the only wife of Charles V of the House of Habsburg -, Holy Roman Emperor from 1526 onwards. She bore him 4 children. ;
The history painting depicts an event from the year 1520. The crowd scene is based on an idea Makart found in notes by Albrecht Dürer. Stylistically, Makart borrows from Rubens and Titian when he shows, next to the Emperor Charles V, a multitude of extras dressed in various fashion styles in the historicist manner and half-naked women. ;
Some contemporaries recognised in the painting the portraits of well-known figures from Viennese society, for example Johanna Elisabeth Maria von Klinkosch (1848-1925) later Countess Liechtenstein, a favourite model of Hans Makart, is portrayed in the act of scattering flowers near the Emperor. The same is true for her sister Paula (1851-1901), both daughters of the Viennese silver manufacturer Josef Carl von Klinkosch. Hans Makart was awarded a gold medal at the Paris World Exhibition, and his exhibition at the Vienna Künstlerhaus was very successful. ;
In 1882, the monumental painting was sold to the Hamburger Kunsthalle for 130,000 marks. During WWII, it was stored rolled up in the museum’s deposit, and decades later it was restored to a high standard. Until 2016, it was hidden behind a plaster wall because it did not fit into the exhibition concept. In 2020, Makart’s "Entry of Charles V into Antwerp" was displayed again in the course of an exhibition about the artist.
