Ludwig I, born Ludwig Karl August (Strasbourg 25.8.1786-29.2.1868 Nice), was king of the Kingdom of Bavaria. He belonged to the House of Wittelsbach. He succeeded his father Maximilian I on the Bavarian throne after the latter’s death in 1825 and abdicated in favour of his son Maximilian II during the 1848 revolution after his affair with Lola Montez. His marriage in 1810 to Therese of Saxony Hildburghausen established the Oktoberfest. The painted portrait is based on the painting by Joseph Karl Stieler (1826), showing him in coronation robes, with the collar of the Order of Hubertus. Therese Charlotte Luise Amalie of Saxe-Hildburghausen (Seidingstadt 8.7.1792-26.10.1854 Munich) was a princess of Saxe-Hildburghausen and, through her marriage to Ludwig I, Queen of Bavaria from 1825. The painted portrait is based on the painting by Joseph Karl Stieler (1826), showing him in coronation robes.
