![Floris van Schooten - Old Master Paintings II Floris van Schooten - Old Master Paintings II](/fileadmin/lot-images/38A221110/normal/floris-van-schooten-8282159.jpg)
(Amsterdam 1590–1655 Haarlem)
A kitchen scene with a maid peeling carrots, the Supper of Emmaus beyond,
oil on panel, 50 x 66 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private collection, Belgium
We are grateful to Fred Meijer for confirming the attribution of the present panel to Floris van Schooten on the basis of a photograph (private communication).
Behind van Schooten’s characteristic still life rendering of the vegetables being prepared by the cook in the foreground, the figures seated at the table in the background depict the Supper at Emmaus. The scene is set contemporaneously to the first half the of sixteenth century, and was likely executed in Haarlem, to which van Schooten, a Catholic, had relocated, due to the increasing intolerance of the Protestant city fathers in his home town of Amsterdam. Another treatment of the same subject by van Schooten is conserved in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, (inv. no. A 2058).
