Cockfighting is a favorite subject of Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel, which he first captured in 1904 as an illustration for the Viennese magazine “Der liebe Augustin”, published it in 1909 as a color woodcut in the series “Schönbrunner Tier-typen” and also executed variants in watercolor and oil (cf. collection of the Belvedere, Vienna, Inv. no. 5734). The picture-filling composition rein-forces drama-tically the wild dynamics of this life-and-death struggle.
