European Private Collection

Probably the most important animal in Immendorff’s pictorial world is the monkey. The monkey was, as Immendorff himself has said on several occasions, a second self for him: a symbol of the ambivalence of the artist’s existence between conviction and self-doubt. He is both silly and wise and stands for opposites. “The monkey appears sitting on my back, and in front of me is the painting, as I paint, which he attacks and then paints something else or paints me.” The monkey is an intelligent animal in Immendorff’s pictorial language. It often sits on the artist’s neck, sometimes guiding the brush to shake him up again and again so that he does not indulge in routine. Immendorff, Essl Museum Klosterneuburg, 2008, page 57.
