Rolex Oyster Perpetual Date Submariner “Purple Haze”
rare diving wristwatch with “Purple Tropical” dial, reference 1680, c. 1978
Case: gold 750, numbered 5221660, turning bezel, screw crown, diameter c. 40 mm
Movement: self-winding, lever movement, numbered D360422, calibre 1570, 26 jewels
Dial: applied dot, baton and dagger numerals, date, central second
Accessories: folding fastening safety bow, strap segment gold 750
The reference 1680 was launched in 1967 as the first Submariner with date. The dial was designed in blue to match the diving ring. In some models, this turned purple over time. The present model is a very nice example of this so-called “purple haze”. The fastening and caseback are monogrammed, partly scuffed and scratched.
