The Master of the Antwerp Adoration
(active in the early 16th Century)
The Lamentation of Christ,
oil on panel, 34.5 x 30 cm, framed
Provenance:
Private European collection
The present Lamentation over the Dead Christ is a characteristic example of the body of works belonging to the Master of the Antwerp Adoration, so named for his triptych of the Adoration of the Magi conserved in the Koninklijk Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp. Max J. Friedländer was the first to compile the oeuvre of this master of the Antwerp Mannerist school, identifying a common hand in several works which he grouped with the triptych from which the artist takes his name. The physiognomy of Christ in the present panel is comparable with a larger Lamentation by the master (oil on panel, 153 x 113 cm, private collection). Friedländer noted the closeness in the artist’s style to the Master of the von Groote Adoration (active in Antwerp 1500 – circa 1520) and suggested the two painters may have shared a workshop.
